Double wall horizontal autoclaves with a pressing device or with a sieve drum

After the single walled the horizontal autoclaves ( described in my blog of sept 9th 2015 ) were soon followed by the double hull designs, whose heating occurred with steam through the double wall.
The autoclave by Stein from 1872 had not only a steam jacket but for an extra heating there were over the full length of the autoclave three steam piplines, which were directly connected to the steam jacket. Furthermore, the autoclave had a perforated press plate, which was led by the steam lines and was served with a hand wheel with spindle.   Of course the autoclave had the usual equipments and appendages such as the manholes for filling and discharging, steam pipes, drain tube for fat, safety valve/control valve etc.

The double wall was partially filled with water, which was converted to steam and the condensation came back again in the lower part of the double wall. By the evaporation of the moisture from the material to be processed itself or - if necessary by adding extra steam  -  the pressure in the autoclave ran on to the set value on the control- annex safety valve.
After draining off the fat and water with the hand wheel the press plate was turned ever further onto and in that way all fat and moisture were squeezed out, and went through the holes in the press plate to the draining point. The remaining, almost dry mass was discharged  via the manhole at the bottom of the autoclave.

In the same period--similar to the strainer baskets in the vertical autoclaves - the  horizontal rendering boilers became at their longitudinal axis a rotating (horizontal) sieve drum.  Such autoclave was that of Broadnax from 1868, which was divided into two parts additional by an extra sieve plate.
The upper part contained a hand!! operated Sieve drum with on the inside upright rows of teeth. The fat and water first flowed out of the sieve drum then passed through the sieve plate to the bottom of the autoclave.  For the best possible uniform heating now and then the sieve drum  was manually! turned, the teeth in the drum gave an extra diminutive and mixing operation.
The resulting gases and vapours were burned in the boiler fire. At the end of the process the sieve drum was opened and emptied on the sieve plate below it. At the bottom of the autoclave the remaining solid and the fat were just as long heated until all the water evaporates. The fat was then tapped to be further cleaned and the solids removed.

In addition to the upright standing autoclaves, nineteenth century there came also horizontal rendering cookers, of which the device of Black hall-Slight in Edinburgh from 1850 one of the first was.
Black hall-Slights ' autoclave was single hulled, had an oval cross section and was except the front and top fully together with the firebox walled. On top of the autoclave there was a safety valve/pressure regulator and a valve for venting the air, for feeding water and bleeding of pressure. The front had a draining valve for fat and gluewater and a manhole for filling and discharging the boiled mass. The sealing of the manhole cover was done with a clamp, with hemp twine and oatmeal was used as "sealing stuffing".
Right above the drain valve at its full length the autoclave had a sieve bottom, on which the raw bones etc were put. After adding a quantity of water the whole was warmed up. As soon there came only steam from the vent valve on the autoclave the valve was closed and the autoclave brought on a pressure of 2 bar.
After 24 hours steaming and boiling at a pressure of 2 bar the bones, meat and small carcasses were disintegrated and could be bleeding off the autoclave pressure. After that at the bottom of the autoclave first the glue water was drained followed by the fat.

For a more equal pressure loads the cross section of the later rendering autoclaves was no longer oval but round. In addition to that, there were between the front and back along the full length horizontal tie rods or angle irons for reinforcement of the autoclave.

Good to see is that the autoclave does have a safety valve but no pressure gauge and also no sight glass. The device was 2 m long and had 90 cm wide.

The unloading of the rendering autoclave from the cooked animal carcasses

The unloading of the rendering autoclave from the cooked animal carcasses aroud 1880

The cooked material had to removed from the rendering autoclave or “digester” by carving out manually, for which usually someone had to go into the digester. We can imagine, that this is a heavy and extremely unpleasant work. In addition to that, this costs much time because of the fact that the autoclave first had to cool down.

Below a few of the methods are descripted, not only designed to relieve this work a little bit  but also to be able to do this in a much shorter time.

Around 1844, Ebenezer Wilson in Cincinnatti, did this by means of a valve in both the bottom of the digester as in the false seave bottom. Both valves were simultaneously opened with a chain or a spindle through the lid of the digester, after which at one time the solid material fell directly from the sieve plate into a container under the digester. In 1874 Wilson had four of these autoclaves working, each with a capacity of 5.5-7 m3.
The New Yorker Husband did this around 1879 by putting in the digester the sieve plate for the cadaver material diagonally towards the manhole.

In 1867 William Perry’s digester from Massachusetts could be rotated with the aid of a chain around its cross axis in the middle. At one end of the digester was the opening for filling and emptying. The other side had a screen with a drain valve.

The steam was led into the digester through a conduct-pipe through the bearing of  the transverse axis. The digester was put upright and via the drain valve at the bottom the resulting grease and glue water were continuously drained to another barrel. In that way the solid material on the screen remained "dry" and also constantly exposed to the full influence  of the steam.  At the end of the process, the pressure was released, the drain valve disconnected and the filling opening opened. With the chain the whole thing was turned a half turn after which the remains fell from the autoclave for being ground elsewhere to fertilizer.
